first impressions of KU

kansas is the geographical centre of the US, meaning it is in the middle of nowhere. my university is in lawrence one hours drive from kansas city, meaning it is even more isolated. but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. lawrence is a small, but very friendly college town with a pretty happening night life.

the first week of orientation for international students was great. the campus is huge and the buildings and facilities are amazing. i was put up in a residence hall, which was probably the worst accommodation i have ever stayed in. it was old, it was noisy, it was dirty, and it was dark, it was like a prison.

i have since moved into my permanent dormitory which is A LOT better. the dorm seems to be pretty cool with plenty of activities planned and a friendly atmosphere. im also sharing my room (with an american) which is another first for me.

there were around 400 international students who did the orientation, of which im guessing 300 were asian (chinese), just like UNSW! haha but they're actually a lot of fun when they get talking. there is only one other aussie here, which makes me even more exotic. i've met a ton of new people already from a range of nationalities and it will be great to see some familiar faces around campus.

the orientation week coincided with a heat wave, with temperatures touching 96 (36 degrees) and very humid (the asians were really sweating it out). this only added to the tan i've been developing in canada, and orlando:

right now i am busting with excitement, i don't think i can even comprehend how much fun i am going to have!! it feels like schoolies again, except that it'll last 4 months!

classes start on thursday...
